My words are the fire beneath your behind that should make you want to jump up and say ‘something is burning.’

My Story

I've been a creative since the day I was born.

My parents could tell stories about the countless times they found me rapping kids' books and pretending to be on stage.

Music was my first love; I was exposed to every genre imaginable and at 7 I learned to play piano by ear. But soon after, writing became my everything.

I overcame the fear of sharing my words in 2015 when I spit my first spoken word piece on stage and never looked back. In 2016, I got my first paid speaking engagement and went on to make a profession out of writing and speaking.

For 2 years, I shared poetry on social justice issues; talking about police brutality, racism, sexism, and injustice was my passion. But deep down, I still dealt with shame & fear.

I could stand on a stage and speak boldly about all kind of issues, but when it came to sharing my personal life experiences, I kept quiet.

The Poetic Activist was a strong, bold Black woman who could get on stage, walk the streets in protest, and do all the things. How could she share her imperfections and brokenness with the world?

Finally, after much avoidance, I listened to God, left fear behind, and in 2017, I shared my first poem on mental health called “Caesar: A Poem About Suicide”, dedicated to my now 10 year old Chihuahua Terrier Caesar who came into my life at a dark time. The poem spoke of depression that came from trauma of sexual assault, a terrible 5 year relationship that resulted in a cancelled wedding, and my ongoing battle with rejection.

I hid my struggles so well that my family and friends never knew until the day I shared my poem. After that performance, my life as an artist, and a person, changed dramatically.

My passion for fighting injustice is now joined by my passion for mental health, vulnerability, and self love, especially in women and the Black community. Not being okay IS okay and I’m an advocate for people taking off their masks and showing up authentically. I’m also big on fighting perfectionism and people pleasing.

I coined the phrase “Erase shame, tell your story” after publishing my first poetry book 2 Kinds of Fire, encouraging others to live a life where their past or even present is not something they hide but fully embrace as part of their journey to becoming more whole. But remember, I’m human. I’m still on this journey too.

When I'm not doing activist and creative things, I'm living my best life with my amazing husband of 2 years (#Newlyweds) and my furry kid Caesar. I'm a Disney and Harry Potter loving, movie & TV watching, tattoo and piercing having, hyphy and Oakland repping, adventurous weirdo and I love myself to life.
